Successful goal setting

This week, we'll focus on successful goal setting. Goal setting is often not paid the attention it deserves. As a result, most resolutions are unsuccessful. A Forbes survey shows that only 1% of New Year's resolutions last for 12 months (source: https://www.forbes.com/health/mind/new-year-resolutions-survey-2024/)

As always, let's start with "Why"

Most resolutions fail due to the following reasons:

  • You don't have a strong "why" (see: Why asking WHY matters)

  • You did not review your strengths, likes and your environment (see: Habits | Genetics vs Environment)

  • The goal was not specific enough. "More sleep", "More time with loved ones," etc.

  • The execution of the goal was not tied to a cue (e.g., after what event do you allocate time for a hobby?)

  • There are underlying fears (see: How should we process fear?)

How can you improve your success rate?

  • Have a clear "Why". Understand why this goal is important to you.

  • Be specific - When? Where? How Long?. For example, try "8hrs of sleep, bedtime at 9 PM" instead of "More sleep". Or, "6-7 PM is digital distraction-free family time" instead of "More time with loved ones."

  • Overcome limiting beliefs (see: Overcoming Limiting Beliefs)

  • Build a support system (a partner, friend, or coach, etc.)

  • Create a plan, and track the heck out of it. And, forgive yourself if you miss once in a while. Get back on track as soon as you can

Hope this helps you succeed in your goals.

I'll leave you with a question to reflect on:

What is the latest goal you set for yourself, and how did you achieve it?
